Do the Democrats need the Republicans to pass laws? Dems control the Oval Office, the Senate & the House. Why do the Dems even care what the GOP thinks or does? They should tell the GOP to go home, they aren't needed.
But they are needed in the Senate to conclude debate and actually vote on a bill. Otherwise you'd have the likes of DeMint, Vitter, Cornyn, Shelby and other ultra-rightist (mind you not conservative, they aren't conservative) Southern Senators looking back to Strom Thurmond for inspiration and they'd simply fillibust... a lot.
