"...all is quiet, too quiet."
Check out this flash map that shows the spread of Wal-Mart from the one store in 1962 to the present. As VSL points out, it's eerily quiet these days as the corporate infection (in the United States) appears to have subsided. A closer look at the Wal-Mart phenomenon is not that the Mom and Pops have been widely successful, though there are pockets of success as much as most new Wal-Mart constructions are to replace old stores leaving big empty boxes that are unsightly and hard to fill.
Focusing the map in closer shows that the data used is a little deceiving also. The map doesn't account for certain new constructions - for example in the Columbia region has a new Wal-Mart on Bush River road.
